New National Theatre Tokyo announces 2025/26 opera season
New productions of Wozzeck and Elektra plus eight revivals
The New National Theatre Tokyo (NNTT)’s Artistic Director of Opera Kazushi Onotoday announced its 2025/2026 season. Kicking off on 1 October, the new season sees two new productions and eight revivals with a total of 46 performances.
The news was announded at a press conference held in Tokyo the day before yesterday.
Among the two new productions, Richard Jones, the British director, directs Wozzeck by Alban Berg. Joining him are internationally renowned stars Thomas Johannes Mayer, Arnold Bezuyen, John Daszak, and Jennifer Davis. It is going to be conducted by Kazushi Ono.
Elektra is another new production of the season, to be directed by Johannes Erath. The role of Elektra is sung by Aile Asszonyi. The cast includes Mihoko Fujimura as Klytämnestra, while Egils Silins depicts Elektra's brother, Orest. Artistic Director Kazushi Ono himself conducts this production.
From the revivals, the season kicks off with La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini, sung by Marina Costa-Jackson, Luciano Ganci, Massimo Cavalletti under the baton of Paolo Olmi.
In December, Orfeo ed Euridice by Wilibald von Gluck, with direction, choreography, set, costume design and lighting by Saburo Teshigawara, is going to be conducted by Ryuichiro Sonoda.
Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss â…¡ is directed by Heinz Zednik. The cast members include Thomas Blondelle as Eisenstein, Sabina Cvilak as Rosalinde, Salzburg native Rafael Fingerlos as Dr. Falke alongside Daichi Fujiki as Prinz Orlofsky. In the pit is Daniel Cohen conducting.
Other rivals include Rigoletto, Don Giovanni, La Traviata, and L'elisir d'amore.
