A concert devoted entirely to the music of Ye Xiaogang was presented last night at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing. Conducted by Jin Yukuang, the Sichuan Philharmonic Orchestra travelled to the capital to perform four of Ye’s signature works, including two SCPO commissions.
The programme featured The Loquat in Five Colours, Capriccio: Jade Goddess of Mercy for violin and orchestra, The Backyard of the Village, and the five-movement vocal-orchestral suite Du Fu’s Thatched Cottage. The orchestra was joined by violinist Gao Can, tenor Shi Yijie, baritone Liu Songhu, and soprano Qu Weiqing.
The concert marked the opening of the six-day, eleven-event Beijing Modern Music Festival (BMMF). Founded in Shanghai in 2003 and moved to Beijing in 2004, BMMF has since been recognised as the flagship event for contemporary music in China.
